Although we just had a snowfall, spring is upon us. Part of your spring cleaning work should involve your HVAC system. So what should that include?
Replace Filters
You should replace your filters twice annually anyway, and the change in season is a good way to remember. Filters with dirt and dust built up will cause the unit to freeze or even break down completely. Air can flow more freely through clean and clear filters, which will also reduce air pollution inside your home.
Inspect Ducts
Ductwork, or ventilation systems, should be leak free; leaks or holes will cause you to lose air that you are paying to condition. Your system won’t be working as efficiently, costing up to 20 percent of your energy bill! Regular professional duct cleanings (every 2 to 3 years) can prevent this from happening.
Clean Outdoor Unit
The outdoor air conditioning unit often goes forgotten. However, since it contains the compressor, one of the most important elements of the system. Keep the area around the unit clear of plants, bushes and other outdoor items.
Test the System
As frightening as it may seem to turn on your air conditioner when it is barely above freezing outside, you should test it before temperatures rise to high numbers. Turn it on and run it for a short period of time; this allows you to notice any issues with the system and gives you time to fix it before summer comes.
