There are simple warning signs that tell you it’s time for an HVAC repair. But what about when you need to replace your unit? If you don’t address them upon discovery, you could find yourself with higher energy costs or even damage inside your home.
HIGHER ENERGY BILLS: If you find yourself shocked at the high prices of your monthly energy bills, it could be a sign of a problem with the HVAC system. If the problem is minor, a professional repair should do the trick. However, if you still experience issues after the repair, it may be time to find a new system altogether.
STRANGE NOISES: Any sound other than the pleasant hum that shows your system is doing its job – such as squealing, grinding or rattling – are not normal. Either a component of the system is faulty, or the unit is getting old. Try to find what is causing the noise, and call a professional to determine whether a repair can address the problem, or if the unit should be replaced.
STRANGE SMELLS: Abnormal odors could mean a variety of issues with the HVAC system ranging from minor to severe. Don’t just try to “get used to” the smell, have it inspected to avoid more extensive problems or system failure. Find the root of the problem and ask a professional whether it should be repaired or replaced.
YOUR SYSTEM IS OVER 10 YEARS OLD: Most parts of the system will start acting up after about 10 years. If you maintain your system regularly, it could extend the life of the system, but as with all types of mechanical equipment, the system will break down at some point. If the system has issues and is over 10 years old, it may be a better investment to replace it rather than spending money frequently on repairs.
